The failure in all of these efforts to address the root causes of terrorism is short sighted. Even if it isn’t our fault that people hate us, we should recognize that even in a world of many different cultures and value systems, very few people will sacrifice material comforts for any philosophy. While it only takes a few ‘active’ terrorists to create things like 9/11, it requires a vast number of people to tolerate the creation of the attitudes that lead to this. To misquote an old song, “[Terrorism] is just another word for nothin’ left to lose”. Whether real or perceived, there are enough people out there who think they have nothing left to lose to create the infrastructure that breeds terrorism. Regardless of claims regarding this or that philosophy, I strongly suspect that this has more to do with fundamental material comforts - this is really a war between the haves and the have nots.
